Four years ago I set up my first AP rig (a new Celestron Edge HD 8" with a then new Meade DSI IV color astro cam). After running through all the usual noOby issues (focus, being the biggest issue) I came up with
my first AP shot - of M51. I was proud of it but had no idea what I was doing.
I still don't know that much but I have learned a few things over the past four years since that shot was taken. I have learned how to hide an inordinate amount of $$ from a very observant wife. Not really. she's in on it all and I have assured her that the current rig is the last...for now. Hehe. I have also learned a lot from, my local astro clubmates who have shared countless nights helping me with invaluable pointers.
All post was done this afternoon: PixInsight (WBPP, RGB first – DBE, BlurXterminator, Soft Stretch, NoiseXterminator, LRGB Combine [RGB only], Generalised Hyperbolic Stretch; then Lum – DBE, BlurXterminator, Soft Stretch, NoiseXterminator, GHS, LRGB Combine (Lum + RGB), Curves, then in Photoshop (Levels & Crops).
Newer glass, a refractor that has a focuser that doesn't slip, no mirror flop and a steadier mount has made this shot possible. Along with the invaluable help of all the friendly and knowledgeable AB'ers and YouTubers. Thank you for your inspiration and help.
